When should my baby start taking solid food?

For the optimal development of your baby’s chewing and speaking capabilities, the World Health Organisation recommends that infants should be exclusively breast-fed for the first six months of life. Only after six months should your baby start taking solid food. According to certified nutritionist Zhan Zhaozhou, here are some signs that indicate your baby is ready to start on solid food:

    • When your baby can hold her head in an upright position without assistance
    • When your baby starts drooling constantly
    • When saliva starts to accumulate under your baby’s tongue and in the lower jaw
    • When your baby is able to use her mouth to hold a small spoon
    • If your baby pushes away the spoon with her tongue, or refuses it by shaking her head, it means she is not yet ready for solid food. Try again after one week.

How to introduce solid food to my baby?

The introduction of solid food should be done at an appropriate stage of your baby’s development. The sequence in which solid food is introduced also plays a big part in making a successful transition to solid food.

This is why nutritionists recommend starting with food that tastes similar to milk, such as a rice-based milk cereal, or rice cereal prepared with milk.

Once your baby gets used to rice cereal, follow these principles to get your baby to try different solid foods in a progressive manner:

    • Start with bland flavours, moving on to stronger and more tangy tastes at a later stage
    • Progress from fine to coarse textures
    • The consistency should progress from a thin broth to a thicker one with defined grains
    • Introduce solid food gradually in this sequence: grains > fruit > vegetables > meat (beans or fish > poultry > pork or beef)
    • Note: Egg white, nuts and seafood should only be introduced when your baby is at least one year old.

Transition from liquid to solid food

Every baby is unique. Parents should bear in mind that all babies grow at a different rate. So long as you patiently adjust the introduction to solid food according to your baby’s reactions and progress, you’ll find that getting her started on solid food isn’t that difficult after all. Here are a few pointers:

Crying and throwing up is normal

Milk has been your baby’s only food for the past six months. It is only natural that she feels uncomfortable when presented with solid food. So crying and throwing up is perfectly normal, and has nothing to do with your cooking skills, or how good or bad the food tastes.

    Give notice to reduce discomfort

In the same way that you would bathe your baby or change her diapers, use a soothing and familiar voice to inform her that she is about to try a new kind of food. First let her take a sniff of the food, then dab some on her lips. Once she is mentally prepared to try it, put some food into her mouth.

Keep trying to get your baby accustomed to solid food

Behavioral studies indicate that adults need to try a new kind of food at least ten times before they can get used to it. The same applies to babies. Rejecting the same kind of food 20 or even 30 times is part of a normal process in learning to get used to the food.

Avoid changing food or preparation method frequently

Babies sometimes reject certain food after a few meals but it does not necessarily mean that your child no longer likes the food or is bored with it. The fact is that the sense of taste in babies is not fully developed until the age of one, thus changing the food or preparation method frequently makes it even harder for your baby to get used to solid food.

Key points in introducing solid foods

    • Introduce only one kind of food at a time, and ensure a consistent taste and  method of preparation.
    • Every new kind of food should be given to your baby for 3 consecutive days.
    • If your baby is bored or shows displeasure, have a break before trying again.
    • For foods that your baby has yet to get used to, wait five days before getting her to try it again.
