What is altitude sickness?
Altitude sickness is caused by poor adaptation to high altitudes, usually higher than 2400m above sea levels, where air pressure is lower and oxygen is thinner.
Who is at risk of altitude sickness?
It can affect anyone, regardless of fitness levels, especially with rapid ascension.
What are the symptoms of altitude sickness?
Most will experience mild symptoms such as throbbing headaches, nausea, fatigue and rapid breathing, which should warrant no further ascent until symptoms have resolved. In severe cases involving confusion and pale complexion, see a doctor immediately and initiate descent.
What are some of the tips to prevent altitude sickness?
If you are visiting a high altitude place with no access to any medical facilities, you may want to prevent altitude sickness by ascending gradually, climbing no more than 500m per day for any high areas above 3000m. Alternatively, do consult your doctor for altitude sickness medication that should be taken at least one day before reaching a high altitude.
