Can adults be infected with head lice?
Head lice infections are more common in children, but it is also possible for it to spread to adults.
How are head lice transmitted?
Contrary to popular belief, head lice infestations are not really a result of poor hygiene. Head lice are typically transmitted through close hair-to-hair contact or by sharing personal items with an infected individual. These personal items can be anything from combs to hair bands to towels.
How can you tell if you have head lice?
Adult lice appear as moving light-brown objects on the hair shaft. Nits (head lice eggs) may also be found as yellow or brown seed-like objects glued close to the scalp. Lice bites sometimes result in allergic reactions that cause the scalp to itch.
How should a head lice infestation be managed?
Lice treatment lotions containing malathion or benzyl benzoate are available over-the-counter to kill the lice. Do check with your pharmacists for more information.
