Hammer Toes

What is hammer toe?

Hammer toe is a deformity that causes your toe to bend downwards instead of pointing straight, thereby resembling a 'hammer'. Any toe can be affected, but it is most commonly observed in the second or third toe. 

 

What causes hammer toe?

Hammer toe may be present at birth, but it is more likely to develop over time. The most common cause of hammer toe is wearing tight shoes, where the toes are forced into a bent position. Other causes of hammer toe include arthritis, traumatic toe injury, an unusually high foot arch, spinal cord or nerve injury.

 

What are the signs and symptoms of hammer toe?

People with hammer toe often have corns or callus on the top of their toe joint or on the sole of their feet. This may cause some discomfort whilst walking and pain when trying to move or stretch the affected toe. The middle joint of the toe will appear bent, resulting in a claw-like deformity.

 

How do you manage hammer toe?

Getting a properly fitted pair of shoes with soft insoles and a deep toe box to accommodate the hammer toe is recommended. Avoid wearing tight, narrow and high-heeled shoes which may further aggravate the condition. Simple stretching exercises such as picking up a towel with your toes can further aid in straightening and stretching the muscles in your toes.
