What is motion sickness?
Motion sickness is a common condition for some people particularly when they travel, be it by car, train, airplanes or boats.
What are the symptoms of motion sickness?
Motion sickness may happen suddenly, causing the person to feel sick and breaking out in cold sweats. Dizziness, nausea and vomiting then sets in and sometimes, motion sickness may go away as the body adapts to the conditions that cause the problem.
Are there medications to prevent motion sickness?
For the prevention of motion sickness, pharmacy-only medication such as dimenhydrinate orcinnarizine can be taken at least 30 minutes before travel. As these medications may cause drowsiness, avoid any activities that require concentration and coordination.
What are some of the tips to prevent motion sickness besides taking medication?
Whenever possible, always try to choose seats in the middle of the boat or plane as you should experience minimal movement. Try using a pillow or headrest to minimize head movements. Do not read nor play games as these activities usually make the symptoms worse. Avoid eating large meals or drinking alcohol before traveling.
